Welcome to the table

A place for people who love food and good company

Eight at a Table brings curious people together around food. Online, members share the recipes they love and the stories that come with them. In person, we gather in small groups to share a meal, trade stories, hear new perspectives and, more often than not, leave with a new friend.

You may know one or two people at the table, or no one at all. That's part of the fun.

Recipes & Stories

Your recipes, and the stories behind them

  • Share a recipe by sending a photo of the card, a PDF or a web address. It comes back typed up, with a picture of the finished dish.
  • Keep the story private. Who it came from, family notes and the original card can stay with the people at your Chef's Table, while the recipe goes to everyone.
  • Make recipe books. Gather recipes into your own collections, and print them as a book or as recipe cards.
  • Cook with it. Scale a recipe up or down, check off steps as you go, and note when you made it.
  • Talk about it. Leave a comment, mark your favorites, and find recipes by name, ingredient or kitchen.

Small tables, real conversations

Our gatherings are dinners, cooking lessons and Rounds of Eight: six to eight people at one table, with a Table Tender to welcome everyone and keep the conversation going. Come curious, bring a story, and be ready to listen.

You can bring a guest to most events; just say so when you sign up.

What people say

I came knowing one person and left with seven new friends and a recipe for lamb kofta I make every week now.

My grandmother’s cards were falling apart in a shoebox. Now they’re typed up, with her stories, for the whole family.

The Table Sparks got us talking about things I never talk about with strangers. I didn’t want the night to end.
Aisha R., SPARQ! at the Back Forty
I was nervous to go alone. By dessert we were planning the next dinner.

How we treat each other

Table Manners

  1. Come curious.Arrive ready to meet people, not sort them into categories.
  2. Make room.Share the conversation and invite others in.
  3. Listen to understand. The goal is not to win.
  4. Speak from your own story.Personal experience is welcome; sweeping claims are less helpful.
  5. Respect difference.Different backgrounds and viewpoints are part of the point.
  6. No selling, recruiting, or promoting. This is not a commercial table.
  7. Pass if needed. No one has to answer every prompt.
  8. Keep trust.Do not repeat personal stories in identifying ways without permission.
  9. Support the Table Tender. They are there to help the table work well.
  10. Keep it lighthearted.Fun, informative and curious.

Eight at a Table isn't networking, dating, a debate club or a sales pitch. It's simply a table where people can meet, listen, laugh, learn, and maybe make a new friend.

Meet Jay and Pam

J

Jay L.

Founder and Head Tender

Jay started Eight at a Table to bring together people who might never otherwise share a table. Jay hosts Rounds of Eight around Huntsville, keeps a pocketful of Table Sparks ready for a quiet moment, and built this site so the family's recipes, and now everyone's, have a home. Jay's own contributions to the recipe box lean toward the famous five-minute breakfast.

P

Pam H.

Co-organizer and Table Tender

Pam is the cook behind most of the recipes that started this collection: pies, soups, holiday sides and cakes, many from handwritten cards. Pam co-organizes our gatherings, tends tables, and loves trying a dish from someone else's kitchen, then asking for the story behind it.
